A key issue in our contemporary world

Religious Freedom, or the denial of it, has continued to be a key issue in consideration of human rights right up to the present time. The recent attempt to establish legislation to deal with incitement to religious hatred is one example of the current debate. In fact the suggestion for a Centre for Religious Freedom first arose from a Conference which was discussing religious freedom in an interfaith context. The Thomas Helwys Centre seeks to be part of a network of resources to address such issues in our own context.

In other parts of the world, Baptists and other minority churches continue to experience persecution and restrictions on their religious freedom. These are carefully monitored by the Baptist World Alliance, the European Baptist Federation and organisations such as Keston College. Again, we hope we can make a contribution to religious freedom as a global concern from the experience of Baptists worldwide.
